I was wondering if it already exists, a label specifically for LinuxMusicians?
Could it be a good idea? Why or why not?
What would the criteria be?
Would this be an advantage?I have no experience in the business, not on a label yet, but maybe there are people around here with cool ideas about this matter?
Imagine CD's or Vinyl on worldwide sale with various artists from this forum?
Nice idea but
1) Very few people who participate on this forum are musicians. There are a few but they're a minority.
2) You'd have to think and dream bigger than concentrating on a Linux theme. Perhaps if you can work in some hippy & FLOSS and sharing caring lifestyle stuff it would make more sense but then your problem will become that there's probably not going to be any money and wages in it.
3) Unless you become really good at doing merch and can create some kind of grassroots community momentum (which involves cross-selling and promoting a bunch of other things to your captive audience) there's no money to be made. The mainstream industry people are already struggling as it is, live gigs hardly pay gas money if you're a small timer, there's no money in music sales unless you're a megastar. And megastars make their real money from live shows, not music sales.
4) That's a very in-exhaustive list of problems you will need to solve to make it a commercially viable business. (If it's not commercially viable it means it's a failing business model and unless you have a trustfund to fund your hobby business you'll be going out of business).
5) Assuming you manage to solve some of these problems and become commercially successful then the next struggle is going to be how not to sell out to the corporations and the man. Once the money starts flowing in people will start inventing all kinds of wonderful excuses and justifications to sell out. It's very difficult to keep it real.
