Hi, my main tip is to keep a main productive system isolated from system updates. In linux audio, newer does not always mean better, and because of the 'free' status, in it's several definitions and practicalities, there is not always a lot of testing done for overall compatibilty with other audio tools and system software. If you can set up a couple of other systems on drives/media, to replicate your main setup, or test other distros, use those to update and experiment. Surprises are fun
My best setup is an older AVLinux with wine 6.22 and a 5.15 kernel. I have newer AVLinux setups with more modern system libs etc, and wine-stable 9, that I use for tempting new or discovered plugins/standalones that come with modern expectations. Having one system with all the gaming graphic libs/tools and nVidia 3d card and driver, is also lucky. Some modern gui's won't function without them. And buying some U-he plugins is important if you want a trouble-free way to gather thousands of great synth sounds and capabilities.
I use Zebra 2/HZ, Hive 2, Repro 1 and 5, ACE, Twangstrom, ColourCopy, and the free and mag-ware products, TripleCheese, Tyrell N6, Podolski, and Beatzille/BazilleCM
