I almost bought Mixbus 11 Pro in an impulse until I come across iLok in their second step. Yikes.
I saw in the Mixbus page that surround sound can be rendered to binaural. Well, I wonder how I can do that in Linux... I mean, going from 5.1 to 2-channel stereo while preserving surround sound information for those who have a receiver that's capable of Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound... The way I understand it, if the polarity in the right channel is flipped, the sound will get sent to the surround speakers. Lowering the right channel by 3dB will send the sound to the left surround speaker and vice versa for the right surround speaker. I don't know how binaural works other than having 2 mics attached to the sides of the head...
Anyway, after I hold off on that impulse buying decision, I checked out ReasurroundPan and I noticed that Reaper can do up to 7.1.4 surround sound! Too bad I don't have an Atmos setup that is portable and I can move from place to place, and even if I do, Linux cannot do Atmos without a proprietary license.
I had to do some searching and I came across Eclipsa Audio, formerly Immersive Audio Model and Formats, or IAMF for short. Well, right now, it seems Samsung will implement Eclipsa Audio in future TVs and soundbars. Hopefully other home theater manufactures will implement it later this year or next year...
Anyway, I do not mean to go off-topic, but the fact that Mixbus 11 Pro now has support for Dolby Atmos is freaking awesome.
Update: I'm going to have to admit. Analog emulation is great and all, but how am I going to hear the same sound (such as guitar and acoustic bass) but with different analog consoles? Honestly, I probably would shy away from analog emulations and all that marketing hype... I do wear hearing aids due to my high-frequency hearing loss, but if it's very subtle when going from Ardour to Mixbus 11 Pro, other than surround sound panning, I don't think it's worth it with all the authorization and licensing limitations.
