I've not found anything that matches the scope or quality of samples in the Linux world.
Happy to pay for it, does not have to meet the Linux mantra of free!!
Your best best is to build a collection yourself. Use the following tools:
- Use Sfizz-UI, LinuxSampler, Sforzando (Linux version coming this summer), etc for SFZ instruments
- Use Decent Sampler for Decent Sampler instruments
- Use FLuida, FluidsynthVST, LinuxSampler, etc for SF2 instruments
- Use Shortcircuit-XT (Coming soon), TX16Wx, TAL-Sampler, Redux, Bliss Sampler, etc for building your own, or importing other formats
- Use Apisonic Labs' Speedrum 2, or TAL-Drum, or Drumlabooh, etc for drum samples
There are lots of various sampler choices, and there are hundreds of Gigabytes of sampled instruments. Download the free ones; buy the commercial ones. I've got about 300 Gb of instruments and samples that I've collected over the last 20+ years. Once I finish going through all of them, I'll probably have half of that, but it will all be good quality.
Organize your sampled instruments into folders. I use the following organization:
GM Soundfont Banks
GM-Mapped Drum Kits/Percussion
Pianos
Organs
Keys Misc
Guitar
Bass
Orchestral Libraries
Orchestral Misc Strings
Orchestral Misc Woodwinds
Orchestral Misc Brass
Orchestral Misc Bells
Orchestral Percussion
Choir/Vocals
Synth Keys
Synth Leads
Synth Bass
Synth Pads/Strings/textures/Drones
Synth Winds
Synth Brass
Synth Bells
Synth Percussion
Synth Arps/Plucks
Synth Misc
World/Ethnic
Drum Kits/Hits
Drum Percussion
Drum Misc
SFX
Once you've done this, you will have at least as good of a rompler as anyone else, and possibly better.
Search this forum for lists of places to buy or download samples. Back in 2023, I posted an exhaustive list that I spent days gathering. It was the best of the internet as far as I could find. It's here in these forums. Find it, and follow the links. I'd be willing to be most of them still work, and will lead you to gigs and gigs of sampled instruments. Best of luck!
EDIT: Here's the link to my list:
