Ardour isn't great for MIDI, try Qtractor instead.
The only problem is that most of my workflow has been established in Ardour, so I'll need to get into it for my audio tracks. I could create individual audio tracks from the instruments in Qtractor to mix in Ardour, but I'll have to see how much extra work that generates. I already spend too much time not laying down guitar or vocal tracks as it is.
