'synthedit junk' is a bit misleading. There are many great synthedit creations. The modules used, the way they are assembled, and the presets created
can be excellent. I have a few dozen such instruments, used as often as modern stuff, and have just 'scratched the surface', with plenty more to investigate. The 32 bit Crysalis, Nero, and Latte from MaxSynths have been freeware for quite a while, work fine in Reaper, and worth having on hand. Found by search at

Reaktor is a different beast, warts and all  . For a musician, it has a great library of free ensembles, Steampipe 2 is a favorite. Look at the comments and download counts, and note the devs who score high in those areas. There are also some great inexpensive commercial ensembles, some of which are unique even among top synths made outside Reaktor. Prism, Razor, Form and Molekular are quite interesting and deep if one likes to create really new sounds not commonly provided by competitors.
Cheers

PS a lot of issues vanish when you stick with one distro, and solve issues one by one. AVLinux comes from Mepis linux members, with antiX allegiances, later renamed MX Linux, with a solid debian base, who cooperate with GMaq, so a pretty fine team and lineage
