PW with IRQ scheduling vs PW with timebased scheduling: no difference.
More surprisingly, this is the only case where my experiences differ. Switching to the Pro Audio profile made huge difference in terms of xruns in my case.
The difference here is probably that I use the onboard audio chip, no usb audio interface.
So the wilder variation may just be a case of pipewire reporting the load more often. But, that is not an explanation for the audible distortion and xruns which is much more rampant with pipewire than jack, indicating that the magnitude of DSP load variation is indeed much larger than with jack.
not sure if above mentioned variation is a real cause of xruns. On the other hand, my experience tells me that there is a direct correlation between DSP load and xruns when the load reaches a certain threshold.
I didn't mean to ascribe the xruns to the DSP load variation itself, but because this variation is much larger with PW than with Jack with the same heavy-on-the-cpu project (on average some 60% DSP load), the PW peak load will enter my hardware's xrun territory (approximately >65% DSP load) much more often than Jack does.
