This is a bit old, but I thought I would let others know. I eventually messed up my jack and alsa configurations so badly I could not get any sound on my system and ended up doing a fresh install. I opted for Ubuntu Studio, and everything magically worked (multiple old interfaces tested, as well as some old midi controllers). I have since been using Ubuntu Studio exclusively. Also, from my experience, installing the Ubuntu Studio package on an Ubuntu system did not quite do the trick, so a different system was the solution for me. The caveat is that Ubuntu Studio is quite a bit different than Ubuntu for a newbie like myself (aside from the default software selection, which can always be complemented after the install, the graphic environment on Ubuntu Studio is apparently KDE Plasma, which has a different feel than Gnome which is the default on Ubuntu).
