The Producer's Area • Re: Live recording: replacing audio tracks

I have done something similar for a live gig (feel free to look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7HGSzhyQRM) we've had last year. We've got a one hour stereo recording taken directly from the mixer and takes of smartphone video recordings of some of the songs. I'll try to remember my work flow:

  • cut the audio in slightly bigger chunks than the corresponding video parts using an audio editor (e.g. audacity)

  • open the video in audacity (that will extract the audio part) and additionally the corresponding (slightly larger) audio file. Now you can shift one of them in time to get the most possible synchronization. Compare by audio shapes and a/b listening. If satisfied cut the overlapping parts of the audio takes away to have the same length for both takes. Export the trimmed audio take into a new file.

  • Now either first replace the audio of the video with the newly exported audio take (I have used avidemux) or directly use OpenShot like described below.

  • I've used OpenShot to create the final Video. Here you either import your video snip-sets with already replaced audio or you import video and audio files independently and mute the audio of video track. For the latter ensure that video take and corresponding audio take stay in sync. If you want to shift video in time you have to shift audio correspondingly. That's why I prefer to replace audio in the video track beforehand.

  • Use the power of OpenShot to create your final video.

For sure there are more simple methods or better tools but this workflow worked for me. Fell free to ask further questions if necessary.
Good luck
