If you have big projects with many plugins in your DAW then it's crucial if the DAW acts as one or as multiple jack clients. If it acts as one jack client then the realtime load cannot be distributed among the CPU cores.
Qtractor acts a one jack client. I don't know how Reaper works.
I use Qtractor and could switch back to a much smaller buffer size by using non-mixer-xt to host CPU demanding plugins. It's now my standard approach for new projects. I wrote a mini howto:
